Profound raised $180 million to help brands get quoted by ChatGPT, not just ranked by Google

The round values a two-year-old company at $1.8 billion, seven months after its last one, on the bet that answer engines are the new search box.

Profound announced a $180 million Series D on 15 September, co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins, valuing the company at $1.8 billion. That is up sharply from the $96 million Series C it closed less than seven months earlier, and it makes Profound one of the fastest-appreciating startups in the answer engine optimisation category it helped invent, the practice of getting brands surfaced and cited correctly inside AI chat answers rather than blue links.

The company said revenue has tripled over the past six months and that it now serves more than 1,000 enterprise clients, including Comcast, Estee Lauder and Walmart, with customers covering over a third of the Fortune 100 and 16 per cent of the Fortune 500. Existing backers Lightspeed, Khosla Ventures and South Park Commons all returned for the round alongside the new leads.

The pitch is straightforward: as more purchasing research moves from typed search queries into conversational answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, marketing teams lose visibility into whether their product is being recommended, misdescribed or omitted entirely. Profound sells the dashboard that claims to show them, plus tools meant to influence what the models say.

It is also a bet that a market this specific is durable rather than a feature that OpenAI, Google or Microsoft could fold into their own analytics products once it proves worth bothering with. Profound has not disclosed what fraction of that tripled revenue is retained rather than promotional, nor how it plans to keep its optimisation techniques working as the underlying models change their citation behaviour release to release. A category built around servicing someone else’s black box carries a dependency its investors are pricing at $1.8 billion without yet seeing tested.
