Anthropic says it will commit 5 percent of its shares to a new public benefit fund. It announced the plan on 18 October.
The fund will be a wholly owned entity inside the company, not an outside foundation. Anthropic says that structure gives it more flexibility and scale for projects of societal benefit.
There is a ratchet. The company can add a further 2 percent for every 50 percent increase in its value. The baseline, and how value is measured, were not given.
Uses are described only in broad terms: large donations to traditional nonprofits, or direct distributions to particular populations. Anthropic says bolder approaches may be needed given the pace of AI, and that the fund gives it room to try them.
The timing is not accidental. Chief executive Dario Amodei has called the public backlash against AI fundamentally a crisis of trust, and the company has already pledged $200 million to study AI’s effect on jobs.
The announcement gives no dollar figure for the stake or the fund, and no valuation to work one out from. It does not say which share class is involved, or when the transfer happens.
The size of the pledge will depend entirely on a valuation the announcement does not state.
Nor does it say who decides what gets funded. Anthropic will share more on structure and governance in the coming months, which leaves a pledge that cannot yet be tested against anything.
