Gemini has a billion monthly users and no stated subscriber count

Google’s fastest-growing product ever covered its last 50 million users in under a month, most of them talking rather than typing.

Sundar Pichai said on 11 August that the Gemini app had passed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the fourteenth Google product to reach that mark and the fastest ever to get there. The climb went from 400 million in May 2025 to 900 million by May 2026, and then covered the final stretch from 950 million to a billion in less than a month.

The usage mix is more revealing than the headline number. Google says 63% of users interact by voice rather than text, and that one in five Gemini Live sessions involves the camera or screen sharing rather than speech alone. The app generates more than 150 million images a day and can carry out tasks across more than 40 other apps.

ChatGPT reached a billion monthly users in June, so the two are now nominally level. The comparison flatters Google, because distribution is doing much of the work: Gemini ships inside Android, Search and Workspace, which means a monthly active user is often someone who encountered it rather than someone who sought it out. The figure that is not distribution is iOS, where Google reports more than 100 million active users.

What the announcement left out is what any of it earns. Google published no subscriber count alongside the milestone, and the timing, a day before its Made by Google event, suited a headline number more than a financial one. A billion users who cost real money in inference and generate no subscription revenue is a materially different business from a billion who pay, and only one of those two was described.
