Boston Dynamics opened its Robotics Metaplant Application Center inside Hyundai Motor Group’s Metaplant America near Savannah, Georgia, this week, a dedicated testbed where Atlas humanoid robots train on real automotive tasks such as sequencing parts before they reach the assembly line. Hyundai has committed to deploying 25,000 Atlas units across its own and Kia’s global plants over the coming years, a scale commitment well beyond the pilot programmes most humanoid makers have announced so far.
The timeline is deliberately staged rather than immediate. Hyundai says Atlas will only move onto processes with proven safety and quality benefits, starting with parts sequencing and logistics from 2028, with component assembly work, a task closer to the physical core of vehicle manufacturing, not arriving until 2030. The Metaplant itself already builds the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9, meaning Atlas is training inside a live production environment rather than a lab built to resemble one.
Hyundai bought a majority stake in Boston Dynamics in 2021, and this centre is the clearest sign yet of what that acquisition was meant to produce, a captive customer large enough to justify years of Atlas development before any commercial humanoid market existed to sell into. Most competitors are still chasing a first paying customer. Hyundai gave Boston Dynamics one before the robot was ready, and is now absorbing the training cost that implies.
The 25,000 figure is a target, not a delivery schedule, and Hyundai has not said how it will measure the safety threshold that gates each new task, or what happens if Atlas cannot clear it on the 2028 timeline. A training centre proves a robot can learn a task. It does not yet prove the production line can absorb 25,000 of them on schedule.
