Japan’s answer to the humanoid labour shortage has wheels, not legs

ugo built a government-commissioned robot that teleoperators drive by hand, on the theory that every task it performs is training data for the model that eventually won’t need them.

Tokyo robotics company ugo unveiled ugo Nova on Wednesday, a wheeled, dual-armed robot designed and manufactured entirely in Japan, with mass production scheduled to begin in 2027. The robot was developed under a project commissioned by NEDO, Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, and proposed by the AI Robot Association, making it a state-backed answer to a labour shortage rather than a venture-funded bet on humanoid novelty.

ugo Nova has two seven-axis arms plus additional joints in its head and waist, and moves on wheels rather than legs, a deliberate trade of mobility range for stability and lower cost in the human-built environments it is meant to work in. In demonstrations the robot hammered nails and drilled holes under remote control, tasks chosen to resemble the kind of repetitive physical labour Japan’s ageing workforce increasingly cannot fill.

The teleoperation is the actual product. Operators drive ugo Nova using bilateral controllers or VR headsets, and every session captures synchronised video, joint position, torque and command data intended to train the robot base models that physical AI developers need and mostly lack. ugo is selling access to real, economically useful work as a data-collection pipeline, not just a robot.

No price, unit cost or initial customer has been disclosed, and 2027 mass production is a target rather than a contracted date. Whether ugo Nova ever operates without a human on the other end of the controller, and how many billable years of teleoperated drilling that transition is meant to take, remains ugo’s to answer.
