Pacific Fusion broke ground on 25 August on a demonstration facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico, aiming to reach what it calls net facility gain, producing as much energy as the system draws, by 2030. The design fires coordinated electrical pulses through 156 modules to build magnetic fields that crush a fuel target the size of a pencil eraser until its atoms fuse. Each pulse is meant to release about 100 megajoules, roughly ten times the yield of the National Ignition Facility’s record shot.
The approach is pulsed magnetic inertial fusion, a bet on pulser hardware rather than lasers. The demonstration plant is designed to fire several shots a day. A commercial reactor would need one a second, a gap of nearly three orders of magnitude the company acknowledges. Co-founders Carrie von Muench and Keith LeChien called the 100 megajoule target without precedent for a machine of this kind.
Pacific Fusion raised more than $1 billion in a Series A that pays out against milestones rather than in a lump, a structure meant to keep the company honest about progress. That puts it among the best funded private fusion efforts, alongside Commonwealth Fusion Systems and Helion, each of which has a hyperscaler lined up as an eventual power buyer. The capital is arriving well ahead of any proof that the physics and the economics both hold.
Net facility gain is not the same as net energy gain, and this design has shown neither. The 2030 date is for the demonstration machine, with a commercial plant placed vaguely in the mid 2030s. Breaking ground is a real commitment of capital, but the number that matters, energy out against energy in from a repeatable shot, is still a projection on a milestone schedule.
