The US Department of Energy launched a competition on Thursday offering up to $215 million to whichever company can build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of at least 100 logical qubits and hundreds of millions of fault-tolerant operations, a threshold the agency calls scientifically relevant rather than merely experimental. Applications from private-sector companies are due by 19 October, with a separate $45 million call open to national laboratories to build a testbed that verifies whichever machines qualify.
The money is structured in tiers rather than paid as a single prize. An initial phase offers fixed awards worth up to $1.5 million per company for hitting early milestones. A second phase splits a $100 million pool among companies that demonstrate a qualifying machine at the 100-logical-qubit threshold, with two further $50 million bonus pools reserved for whoever pushes past 150 and 200 logical qubits respectively.
The DOE’s own framing ties the effort to problems it says classical computers cannot currently touch, including fusion plasma modelling and battery materials design, areas where the department funds research directly and would be a first customer for any machine that clears the bar. No company has yet demonstrated 100 logical qubits of the kind the competition specifies, a gap current hardware roadmaps measure in years rather than months.
What the competition does not fund is the possibility that nobody wins it on this timeline. If the deadline arrives with no qualifying machine, the DOE has not said whether the money rolls over, shrinks, or simply lapses, leaving America’s fault-tolerant quantum computer exactly where it was: a target date, not a machine.
